Una collaborazione tutta canadese, quella tra Justin Bieber e Shawn Mendes, che hanno firmato insieme il brano “Monster”. I due musicisti lavorano per la prima volta insieme, dopo aver dichiarato già più volte in passato di essere aperti ad una collaborazione. Il nuovo brano farà parte di “Wonder”, il prossimo album di Shawn Mendes e si apre proprio con la sua voce: “You put me on a pedestal and tell me I’m the best / Raise me up to the sky until I’m out of breath“.
Il brano prosegue con Justin Bieber che parla della stessa condizione: ritrovarsi su un piedistallo all’età di 15 anni, con grandi sogni e tanti errori. Ci ha pensato Shawn Mendes, intervistato da Zane Lowe, a spiegare meglio di cosa parla il brano. 22 anni lui, 26 Bieber, entrambi hanno conosciuto il successo fin da giovanissimi:
Ho sempre sentito questa canzone dentro di me, ma non ero mai riuscito a concretizzarla. E poi all’improvviso mi ritrovo ad ascoltarla, così è iniziato il mio rapporto con Justin.
Ci sono voluti tre mesi prima di trovare la quadra, ma alla fine il risultato ha soddisfatto entrambi e sicuramente farà innamorare i loro fan:
Riguarda il modo in cui la società mette le celebrità su un piedistallo per poi guardarle cadere, sembra un vero intrattenimento per gli altri. Ed è difficile per noi.
Shawn Mendes ha raccontato di avere avuto una conversazione profonda con Justin Bieber al telefono. I due cantanti si sono confrontati sull’argomento, che li colpisce direttamente:
Mi sono sentito così bene, perché per me era come un cerchio che si stava chiudendo, quel ragazzo è il motivo per cui ho iniziato a cantare.
Justin Bieber è diventato una popstar di fama internazionale quando era adolescente, dopo che il suo talento era stato notato su YouTube. È stato l’idolo di milioni di ragazzi sparsi per il mond, “Era come Elvis per me”, ha spiegato Mendes, che ha trovato il coraggio di mostrare il suo talento proprio seguendo l’esempio del suo idolo. Proprio come Bieber, però, anche Mendes ha dovuto fare i conti con tutte le sfumature del successo, anche quelle negative:
Riuscire ad avere una conversazione così umana con lui e sentire la sua verità emergere attraverso questa canzone, insieme alla mia, mi fa pensare che questo sia uno dei brani più speciali che abbia mai scritto. Più la ascolto, più la approfondisco, più penso che non si tratta solo delle celebrità, ma dell’esperienza umana.
